Measuring Patient Safety Culture – Can we reveal the Intangible?

This one hour webinar will address how patient safety culture is measured so participants have a sense of what culture measures can and cannot achieve. Suggestions for ways to start the culture conversation in an organization or with a team will be provided. Recent data from newly graduated health professionals in medicine, nursing and pharmacy on their perceived patient safety cultural competency will also be shared to highlight the complexities involved with fostering such a culture in healthcare organizations.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session participants will:
- understand the strengths and limitations of measuring patient safety culture,
- be able to critically reflect on the patient safety culture in your work area (e.g., department or unit) and organization, and
- have a variety of tools you can use to assess and facilitate discussion of workgroup patient safety culture.

Healthcare professionals individually or as part of workgroup, unit, department, and organizational leaders with an interest in fostering a patient safety culture.

Liane Ginsburg - Associate Professor
School of Health Policy & Management at York University
Liane Ginsburg is Associate Professor of healthcare organization and management in the School of Health Policy and Management at York University. Her research interests focus on patient safety culture and learning from patient safety events and she has published on measurement in both of these areas. Liane is also interested in knowledge translation, specifically with respect to the utilization of research, data and other information by health care providers and managers. Liane is currently principal investigator on a CPSI funded study examining patient safety competence in health professional education.
