Contemporary Issues in the Use of Psychotropic Medications in the Management of Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia in Long–Term Care

This one hour webinar will highlight the different behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, the current evidence regarding which medication to use for which symptoms, and the associated implications to prescribers, pharmacists and nurses. The information is based on a research project in Ontario and will highlight areas that could be a focus for improvement.
Learning Objectives:
- Increase awareness of medication use issues in the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD) in long–term care (LTC) residents.
- Increase knowledge of improvement opportunities in LTC medication management system that affects physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and ultimately residents.
- Highlight actions that each profession can take to enhance the safety and care of residents with BPSD.

Carlos Rojas–Fernandez, BSc (Pharm), PharmD
Dr. Fernandez received his undergraduate degree in pharmacy from Dalhousie University in 1990 a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan (1996), and subsequently completed post–doctoral training as a clinical research fellow in Geriatric Pharmacotherapy in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Dalhousie University (1996–1998).
Dr. Fernandez was with the faculty of Pharmacy Practice at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centre as the founding director of the Geriatric Pharmacy Residency program from 1998–2003. He worked in the Neuroscience Research and Development division of Bristol Myers Squibb as Senior Medical Science Liaison (2003–2009). In 2010, Dr. Rojas–Fernandez joined the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo as the Schlegel Research Chair in Geriatric Pharmacotherapy and Assistant Professor, and is cross appointed with the School of Public Health and Health Systems of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Fernandez is also affiliated with the Centre for Family Medicine as a Consultant Clinical Pharmacist in the Memory Clinic.
Dr. Fernandez has authored various papers on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, including the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies, and population–based studies of psychotropic drug use in older people.
