Background

In March 2010, ISMP Canada initiated a pilot consumer reporting and learning program, SafeMedicationUse.ca, as a component of the Canadian Medication Incident Reporting and Prevention System (CMIRPS). CMIRPS is a voluntary, confidential program that collects, analyzes and distributes information on medication incidents. The knowledge gained through analyzing medication incident reports is used to make medication use safer.

The SafeMedicationUse.ca program includes a website offering a consumer-friendly electronic medication incident reporting system, as well as a selection of educational materials designed to support a proactive role for consumers in medication safety. Learning gained from the analysis of incident reports submitted by consumers forms the basis of newsletters and alerts that are added to the SafeMedicationUse.ca site on an ongoing basis.
